Fire razed several shops and part of a church building after a tanker containing Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, exploded yesterday, at Total depot Dockyard, Apapa Road, area of Lagos. The incident was said to have started at 5:00am and raged till 10:00am before a team of fire fighters from Oando,Total and fire service arrived at the scene to put it off. An eyewitness who preferred anonymity said, “the incident began at about 5am, when illegal oil-bunkers were transferring PMS from kegs to the tanker. While transferring fuel from kegs to the tanker, one of the kegs was said to have fallen and caught fire which engulfed the tanker. Fortunately, the other tanker close by was empty it would have been more serious. Immediately the fire started, the culprits all ran away. The eyewitness added that residents of the area had made several complaints to the police on the activities of these illegal bunkerers but nothing was done until the incident happened. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Wednesday in Abuja condemned the stigmatization of Nigerians by some countries over recent cases of the Ebola Virus Disease in the country. Speaking at a meeting with Mr. David Navarro, a Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General, President Jonathan particularly denounced discriminatory actions such as that which forced Nigeria’s team to the Youth Olympics in China to abandon its participation. Noting that there was no justification for such stigmatization of Nigerians since the Ebola Virus Disease had been effectively contained in the country and never attained epidemic levels, the President called for the cessation of discriminatory actions against Nigerians over the virus and urged the UN Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki Moon to support the call. Safety trials on an Ebola vaccine are being fast-tracked, meaning it could be given to healthy volunteers as early as September, researchers said Thursday. The vaccine will be given to volunteers in Britain, the Gambia and Mali in a bid to tackle the spread of an epidemic which has spread across west Africa, killing 1,552 so far. Researchers hope the trials could finish by the end of 2014. If they are successful, the vaccine could then be given to people infected with Ebola, which is spread through bodily fluids. The move was announced by pharmaceuticals giant GlaxoSmithKline — which is developing the vaccine with the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) — and London-based medical charity Wellcome Trust, which is contributing to a grant to pay for the trials. “A candidate Ebola vaccine could be given to healthy volunteers in the UK, the Gambia and Mali as early as September, as part of a series of safety trials of potential vaccines,” the statement said. Former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo during the early hours of yesterday met with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa in Abuja to have a “discussion on the country’s security issues”. The meeting which took place some days after the ex-president had praised and castigated the current administration in the area of economic management bordered on the insurgency in the North Eastern part of Nigeria. The invitation of this meeting from the president to the ex-president is well appreciated by Obasanjo as he pledges to always make himself available on national issues in the interest of peace and progress of the country.

There’s an unconfirmed report that A doctor in PH, who secretly treated a diplomat who had contact with the index case, Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, has died of Ebola. The doctor, who has yet to be named, died on Friday. His wife has also taken ill and has been quarantined in Port Harcourt. Interestingly, the diplomat treated by the doctor is still alive. The diplomat, who was part of the team who met with Patrick Sawyer in Lagos, flew to Port Harcourt, Rivers State for treatment, evading Nigerian federal government surveillance for the disease. The late doctor then took him to a hotel for treatment. As a result of this, 70 people have been quarantined. The doctor’s hospital, Good Heart Hospital in Rivers State, has been shut down. The unnamed hotel, where the secret treatment took place, has also been shut down. The Minister of Health and the Rivers State government are expected to make a statement on the incident tomorrow.
